A common toothache is a pain or discomfort you feel in your mouth within a tooth. The pain is the result of some sort of inflammation or damage to the nerve endings that lie within the pulp. If your pulp is damaged, it could be infected and lead to tooth loss.

Typical signs and symptoms of toothaches can be caused by a variety of sources. Some over-the-counter medications have been known to help lessen the pain from toothaches. However, severe pain or swelling that fails to go away 24 hours after taking the medications could mean that a toothache is severe. The same can be said if pain remains after a tooth extraction or after a tooth has been knocked out or damaged.

To help spot signs of a toothache, look for noticeable discharge around a tooth, or an abscess. On occasion, the joints in your jaw may also be damaged. If you have high fevers or unexplained chills, you may be suffering from a toothache as well. Rashes often accompany some forms of toothaches that occur.
